not too old to learn new tricks

March 20, 2009 at 11:55 pm (Uncategorized)

this week i started learning a new department at my part time job. now, don’t get me wrong….my part time job is great….its in retail, working with the public and a wide variety of people….however….some people. most days its the customers that drive me slightly crazy, writing checks when there’s a long line, questioning the price on EVERYTHING, etc.  this week its been the person training me.  let’s just say that she has been doing this particular department for 7+ years and with the company 10+ years. needless to say, she is a bit stuck in her ways.

i absolutely adore effeciency and best practices, yada, yada, yada….but can you at least explain why these things are done? understanding = proficiency. she has told me that in the past she has attempted to train a few people, but they were unable to really ‘get it’….i suspect its because of her ‘teaching’ methods.

in a past life i was responsible for training tons of people, of all different levels of experience; i’d like to think i was a pretty good trainer? i tried to put myself in their shoes and look at things with a fresh set of eyes…trying to make it as simple for them to understand as possible.

anyway…after 3 days of ‘training’….i’m pretty much on my own the next 3 days….oh, yeah….she left me her cell phone number in case i have questions….as if!

can’t even get an ‘intern’ job!

March 10, 2009 at 10:28 pm (Uncategorized)

so i just found out today that i didn’t get the ‘intern’ job i applied for. it was for the local summer art festival; i know you are thinking small time, but its actually ranked in the top five nationally { } . apparenty there were ‘many qualified’ applicants for the available spots. the job description was a variety of tasks including, filing, putting together press packets, organizing vendors and then the actual set up and logistics for the event.

not sure where i went wrong. i thought the interview went well? i’m a genuine person and feel that my communication reflects that aspect? maybe it wasn’t a plus that i was acquainted with the people interviewing and planning the event? i know i’m more mature than the traditional ‘intern’ ….i thought that wasn’t a bad thing?

oh well! i’ve got my ‘survival’ job and facebook to keep me occupied!

let the celebration begin

March 8, 2009 at 4:55 am (Uncategorized)

well, i planned a little get together in celebration of the blessed event…the big 4-0. i invited some gals and we met at a great little restaurant, sbrocco. { } kevin was our fantastic waiter. we ordered a few bottles of great red wine, some cheese flights and a delicious goat cheese pizza. after that it was onward….to a few other places for drinks and snacks.

this was the first event to commemorate my very last birthday celebration! tomorrow will probably have dinner with some friends and monday lunch with another girlfriend. my birthday is off to a tremendous start. i will have to say that at least with age comes the ability to hold my liquor well; or at least pace myself for minimum morning after repercussions! three aspirins and a few crackers later, i was fine.

its time to do something

March 4, 2009 at 4:00 am (Uncategorized)

well after a few weeks of ‘taking it easy’ i’ve decided to get the show on the road, so to speak.  i started on sunday by making a ‘to do’ list of things i wanted to accomplish for the week. pretty easy stuff, buy a new laundry basket, shelves for my closet, plant some lettuce…nothing to taxing. by tuesday i have most things crossed off my list, and i’ve still had time for a nap or two in between. still a few major things on the list, organize and set up the home office; upload snapfish pictures, etc. i’m pacing myself!

i like the list, it gives me a sense of accomplishment, makes it easier to justify taking naps and meeting friends for coffee during the day! i guess its my way of saying, ‘see, i’m still busy!’

i went to my first ‘tweet-up’ tonight. for those not in the know…this is a meeting of twitter friends.  we ‘tweet’ each other and follow various people of interest and then about once a month we meet up. it was a blast! check out  for more info and join a group today. BEWARE it can be addictive. facebook is one thing, but twitter is something entirely different. i really enjoyed meeting a wide group of people. there were college students, moms, dads, business owners, etc.  i knew a few people before-hand, but met a lot more.

i guess the ‘facebook’ demographic is becoming a bit older; twitter is truly a very wide range of people and groups. check it out and enjoy.
